How to Choose an FTP Program

You can upload or download files from a remote computer using File Transfer Protocol (FTP).

FTP refers both to an Internet protocol that permits file transfer and also to the name of software programs that allow you to upload and download files. Depending on your needs, you can choose from an array of FTP software programs or, in some cases, you can FTP directly from your Web browser. In fact, you might have already used FTP this way without knowing it.

Instructions

  • STEP 1: FTP using a Web browser if you want to transfer files from or to a Web site that permits it. This method is most commonly used by sites that provide software downloads and by Web businesses that provide free Web sites to subscribers. In many cases, the process is known as "anonymous FTP," which means you can log in without being granted permission by the remote host.
  • STEP 2: Use an HTML editor with a built-in FTP function if you're planning to develop and maintain a Web site using storage space that you have purchased. This eliminates the need to install an additional FTP program and facilitates the process of uploading the Web site. Make sure your remote Web host permits this type of access.
  • STEP 3: Consider a complete FTP program if you administer a Web site whose server requires this type of access. Unique FTP software applications are available from many sites on the Internet. They range from simple freeware applications to commercial applications with a range of features. If you're the Web master for a complex site with CGI programming, for instance, or if your Web host requires you to change file permissions remotely, you might need a commercial program. Otherwise, shareware and freeware programs are probably fine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to run a virus scan on any files that you download from a remote site.
  • You may need a recent browser version to FTP with it.
  • HTML editors with FTP capabilities are useful to people who design, administer or maintain more complex Web sites.
  • The length of time required for the file transfer will depend on the size of the file (measured in bytes), the speed of your Internet connection and the amount of traffic on the Internet at the time of your transfer. Large files, such as software programs, video clips, sound clips and graphics require considerable amounts of time.
  • Some FTP programs let you overwrite or delete a remote file without asking for confirmation. This makes it very easy for you to make a mistake, even if you're an experienced Web master. Software that asks you to confirm before a deletion will help protect against accidental errors.
